There should be an artbook with all your art, it'd look so freaking rad, I can see it with my mind's eye <3

But back from the dreamland - It's Kurkach... right? <black and white is challenging my recognition skills XD> The details of his armor are fantastic, I've spent most time staring at his shoulders <3

I'm curious what would be the color schemes on this one. I loved the autumny feeling in some of your recent pictures but I'm sure I'll love whatever you come up with, if you ever color this.

Aww man thanks :)
Yes, it's Kurkach. I never keep one armor design for him for long. It's more fun to think up a different yet similar set.
I even colored the picture up to a point but something urgent for drawing came up. I was thinking of doing an autumny one here too, but when I asked 4 different people about 4 versions of the color scheme, they all chose the late summer late day colors (that was... my least favorite color scheme... the other backgrounds were way more vivid... but everybody I asked said it looks most natural).

Redesigning is fun, keep doing it <3

Btw if I may ask, what is your process for coloring black and white pictures? I might start doing some black and white things soon, because it's a better way for me to understand light sources, but I'm a bit hesitant because I don't know if I will be able to color it well afterwards. And you have quite the hang of it. Are you working in Photoshop?

I'm not sure it's worth it myself, it takes a lot of tinkering. When I color a greyscale image, I start layering the colors over the greyscale bits with the layer modes set to overlay or soft light. But I can never make it look quite right without outright painting some bits in color. Also you have to consider that overlay/soft light modes make the dark parts even darker and the very light parts not very saturated. They'll always change your original highlights and shadows a bit. Still, it's a good exercise. You just need to pick colors differently to achieve the hue you actually need.

If you want to monitor your dark and light values when doing color, you can set up a layer on top of the image, fill it with black, and set it to "color" mode. This will make the image appear in greyscale when you turn the layer on. This is how I normally do it.

The greyscale with overlay color method, I think, is probably best to do when you have a rough shaded sketch and want to start making a color image from it without losing your shading. in this case you just continue painting regularly over the colorized sketch. Also overlay and soft light layers are a good way to spice up the colors of an image since they saturate the color you paint with.

Ooh thanks so much for writing about it in such detail, I'm keeping this comment in my inbox for reference!
And hm, I have 0 experience with grayscale for now but thanks for pointing out all those potential pitfalls. We'll see how it works out XD

I'm glad you like it :) I haven't made up the details of the story. He has captured this lady for someone who really wants her delivered to them and is considering the logistics of the road ahead.

But why is she so important? Whose interest is all of this in? Will there be betrayals? Will he ultimately end up aiding the lady's allies by the end of the conflict? Maybe?

Brilliant job :)

This artwork is really exciting and shows a lot of amazing details!

I am very curious about the characters and I would love to learn more about them.

Thank you!

I was making up a vague story as I went. She is a noblewoman. He's been tasked to get her from City A to B with the added detail of A having been under siege. During the sacking of the city he sets up to appear like one of the looters dragging off valuables and random civilian people to be sold into slavery. Later he has to change the disguise to something else that wouldn't be conspicuous as they travel by other settlements and castles. On whose behalf he's acting on, are they the good guys or the bad guys, that's unclear.

As for the guy, I first made him up as and NPC for a D&D game several years ago, but the player liked him a lot so he became a regular and had appearances in later games. He had been very fun to draw, and I had talked with other friends about him, so he remained in my list of characters to keep developing even after the end of the games.

Very nice!

You seem to be very creative and talented :)

Are you a professional or still a hobbyist? For how long have you been doing lovely artworks like this and how old are you now?

Glad you like it :) I'm actually a tiny bit surprised nobody who saw the picture said it is a horse.

It's a bit bulkier and spikier than a horse normally is. Also you do tend to do a lot of non-normal creatures in your pictures so you can't always be sure what it is.

I love the composition, but I think it could use some more value variation (it took me until now to see there was a prisoner, there's a lot of solid black going on) but that aside - I absolutely love this. I would love to see it pushed farther and tighten up some of the details. I vote yes on a color version if you decide on that route. :D

Glad you like the composition! You're right about the prisoner. I tried not to make her the first thing people see (some sort of "wait a second, there's a person down there!"moment) and now there might be a bit of a problem with her values compared to the nearest objects.

Thanks! This is a less typical method for me. I usually use color from the beginning, which also sets a certain mood, so I'm not sure what i'm going to do in this case.

What if you try a very limited color pallet? Like only illuminate a certain part with color?

Awesome picture, I really like it ! The knight with his captive and the castle in the background with the (I assume) clouds gathering on the sky (could also be smoke tho) looks amazing - the composition is really nice, I dig it alot ! Keep up the good work ! :)
